A pandemic can’t kill a Chunker’s spirit!
As the midpoint of the year is upon us, it’s safe to say that 2020 has been tough for countless local businesses and charitable organizations - the World Championship Punkin Chunk Association included. Our goal this year was to bring the World Championship Punkin Chunkin back to Delaware in all its former glory. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic surrounding COVID-19, the WCPCA cannot commit to holding a traditional World Championship event this year.
Although promising, our land search for an East Coast location – started at the end of 2019 – ground to a halt once businesses started closing and events were cancelled. We were forced to abandon our search before any significant progress was truly made. We believe there is light at the end of the tunnel but, with it already being so late in the year, planning for an event that is even close to traditional is not possible. Even as things begin to get back to normal, we don’t yet fully understand how events of our size are going to operate moving forward.
However, as Chunkers, we’re always up for a challenge and we feel that the Chunk must go on. It is our hope that the spirit of Punkin Chunkin will continue with teams all around the world this year. We are diligently working on plans to release a competitive challenge that will allow teams to continue competing under revised rules and restrictions. Once we have ironed out the details on these plans, and obtained required insurance, we plan to release a full statement announcing this year’s “event”.
We hope you will continue to support the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Organization and our teams! The World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association is a trademark, all-volunteer nonprofit that raises money for scholarships as well as organizations that benefit the local community. We host a signature pumpkin-launching event each year, fueling innovative engineering and science-based ideas that draw spectators from all over. Keep up with all things Punkin Chunkin by following us on Facebook or going to our website at www.punkinchunkin.com.
