Tradition Matters. Punkin Chunkin lives in 2019!
From humble beginnings to national notoriety, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin is an event that has always cultivated an odd, challenging, and competitive quest for distance that, in turn, inspires creativity, ingenuity, teamwork, and passion. On November 2nd and 3rd, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) will carry on a tradition started more than 35 years ago when they bring their signature pumpkin-launching event to Chanute Airforce Base in Rantoul, Illinois.
Although Punkin Chunkin is traditionally a 3-day event, WCPCA organizers felt that a 2-day event would be more appropriate given the extraordinary number of changes happening in 2019. “This is the first time the World Championships have ever been held out of the state of Delaware.”, says Frank Payton III, President of the WCPCA, “With a new location, new vendors, and new volunteers – among other things – we want to give this event the absolute best chance for success. The WCPCA is humbled by and appreciative of the support and understanding by fans, volunteers, and friends during the last couple of years. Through all the ups and downs, there was never a doubt that this tradition would continue.”
The town of Rantoul, surrounding communities, and the business and organizations within have also played an instrumental part in getting the 2019 Chunk off the ground. Their support of the event, willingness to work with organizers and overall accommodating attitude has helped remove a lot of the headache in planning an event of this magnitude.
Ticket prices have been adjusted to accommodate the major changes to the event. A weekend pass will now cost just $20, daily passes can be purchased online for $10 per day, and daily passes the day of the event will be $15 per day (cash only). Children under 10 will be able to enter the event for free. For those people that purchased an early bird weekend pass, $5 per pass will be refunded within the next 10 days. Additional changes have been made to the pricing for RV and Tent camping and can be found on the event website.
Currently, there are 30 machines signed up to participate in this year’s event, but there are still spaces available for those interested. As has been done in the past, there will be 3 competition shots by each machine to determine the 2019 World Champion. Two shots will be fired on Saturday and the final competition shot will be fired on Sunday with the Champion being crowned that evening.
Pumpkins play a critical part in the success of an event like Punkin Chunkin and the WCPCA is proud to announce that they have partnered with The Great Pumpkin Patch in Arthur, Illinois as their Official Pumpkin Supplier for the 2019 World Championships. “We could not be more excited to work with Mac Condill and The Great Pumpkin Patch,” says Frank Payton, “Their knowledge of pumpkins and the quality of their product is going to play a big part in creating a successful event.” Along with The Great Pumpkin Patch, the WCPCA is excited to welcome Skeff Distributing as a sponsor for 2019. Skeff Distributing will be the exclusive beer provider for this year’s event with their offering of Anheuser-Busch products.
Sponsor opportunities are still available for businesses big and small! There are also spaces still available – with discounted fees – for businesses and organizations interested in being a vendor at the 2019 World Championship Punkin Chunkin.
